Goldenseal is a perennial herb native to eastern North America. The dried rhizome and roots are the parts of the plant used.

Our Echinacea-Goldenseal combination is recommended when the extra support of Goldenseal is needed. NuNaturals Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is standardized for 5% of the total alkaloids with respect to hydrastine. Goldenseal demonstrates antibiotic activity. One of the alkaloids, berberine, activates special white blood cells (macrophages) that help destroy bacteria, fungi, viruses, and tumor cells. Other chemicals in Goldenseal appear to work synergistically to help these alkaloids do the job better.

Goldenseal helps increase blood supply to the spleen, the organ that helps produce the fighting cells that support your immune system. Increased blood flow to the spleen helps this organ work at optimal levels. The combination of increased macrophage activity and better blood supply is probably why Goldenseal has developed a reputation as a excellent "blood purifier".

Echinacea has many chemical constituents that have pharmacological activities. The main components are polysaccharides, caffeic acid derivatives, flavonoids, polyacetylenes, essential oils, alkylamides as well as other miscellaneous chemicals.* NuNaturals Echinacea extracts standardize for 4% of the echinacosides. It is present primarily in the roots of the species Echinacea angustifolia. This extract is 2-3 times as costly extracts that are standardized for polysaccharides. Because of the high concentration of this extract, a smaller number of milligrams is need as compared to that of extracts standardized for the polysaccharides of Echinacea purpurea.
